LAW OFFICE OF IVAN PERKINS

PRECISION & PERSUASION

In my experience, being an effective lawyer boils down to three things.

First, there is analytic clarity. I research exactly what the law says on a specific point, and the degree to which it is certain and inflexible, or arguable and bendable.

Second, there is emotional sway. I assemble facts, stories, and legal principles in a way that sweeps a judge or juror to a destination that feels natural and inevitable.

Third, I listen to my clients.

EMPLOYMENT LITIGATION

LGBTQ EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION

I litigate employment disputes.  I generally fight on behalf of employees, although I do represent employers in appropriate cases.  I handle discrimination, retaliation, harassment, breach of contract, minimum wage, overtime, privacy, trade secrets, and other matters.  I am happy to take cases through trial or arbitration.  Please feel free to call or email me to discuss whether you may have a case.

PSYCHOTHERAPY LAW AND ETHICS

I help psychotherapists comply with their complex legal and ethical rules. I have researched and written the most complete and easy-to-use guide on this subject, a system of three interlocking Continuing Education courses available at TherapistDevelopmentCenter.com.  My system provides model forms for practice, and enables therapists to become fully compliant with all state and federal laws and ethical rules as quickly as possible.  I represent therapists and social workers in a variety of contexts, including for short advice sessions. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions, and we can see if I can be of help.

LGBTQ people have won tremendous legal and cultural victories in recent years, but the battle for full freedom and equality is far from over.  Workplace harassment and discrimination continues, especially of trans and gender-nonconforming persons.  The way to end this is clear.  The full force of the law must be brought against employers who commit or permit such conduct, and employers must internalize the costs now being imposed on others.  With my passion for this cause, I can fight for employees' rights, and expand the frontiers of freedom, equality, and full social acceptance.

INSURANCE COVERAGE

I have worked with insurance companies in the health care field, and I know coverage disputes inside and out, including from the insurer's perspective.  If you are an insured and are being denied coverage, send me a message.  There may be ways to convince the company that your policy provides coverage.  If you are an insurer, I can probably help you as well.  I have extensive experience working with insurers, including risk retention groups, on coverage matters and policy language.

Need a well-researched, well-organized, and crisply argued appellate brief?  Call me.  I have helped overturn unfavorable decisions for clients before the Ninth Circuit and state appellate courts.
